Register To Curb Unwanted Telemarketing Calls
If you're still experiencing more than your fair share of unwanted calls from telemarketers on your landline or cellular phone, the National Do-Not-Call Registry may be the answer. The registry is made up of consumers who ask to be removed from telemarketers' call lists. The National Registry requires telemarketers to access the registry's database and remove all registered numbers from their call lists. Congress ruled that names stay on the register indefinitely.
If you would like to add your number to the registry, online registration is available at www.donotcall.gov. Telephone registration is available by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222. Those registering by phone must call from the number they wish to register. There is no cost to register - and the system takes about 6 to 8 weeks before calls begin to cease.
You may still receive some telemarketing calls, but you should see a substantial reduction. Many companies or organizations are exempt from the federal rules governing telemarketing, so you may wish to review all the rules of compliance by visiting the do-not-call registry at www.ftc.gov/donotcall.
