Are you eligible for Emergency Broadband Benefit?

Emergency Broadband Benefit discount

HTC has announced it will be participating in the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program (EBB), a federal government program aimed at helping households struggling to pay for internet service during the coronavirus pandemic.

Households that meet income eligibility requirements will receive a temporary discount of up to $50 through the EBB program. The program will operate until the funding runs out or until six months after the federal “Emergency Period” as defined by Congress, whichever comes first.

A household is eligible if one member of the household:

  • Qualifies for the Lifeline program;
  • Receives benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision, or did so in the 2019-2020 school year; This includes households with a student enrolled in a school or school district where every student receives this benefit.
  • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year; or
  • Experienced a substantial loss of income since February 29, 2020 and the household had a total income in 2020 below $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 for joint filers.

There is a limit of one benefit per household per month. Eligible households may apply this discount to any of the HTC internet tiers. Once the temporary funding program ends, participating households will be subject to the undiscounted rates and general terms and conditions at the end of the program to continue to receive service.

Robocalls on the rise

Robocalls were down drastically throughout 2020, but as many businesses re-emerge from the pandemic, the robocalls are back with a vengeance. The fraudulent calls cost Americans millions each year. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reveals Americans lost more than $3.3 billion to fraud in 2020, with COVID-19 fraud losses totaling $319 million for the year.

RoboKiller, an app that helps eliminate spam calls and text messages from reaching your cell phone, reports more than 5 billion spam calls are made in a single month.

South Carolina ranked number three on the 2020 most spam-called states list. In 2021, two of South Carolina’s area codes continue to rank in RoboKiller’s top 10 list of phone numbers flooded by robocalls. The 864 area code is number six on the list, racking up 47.8 million robocalls in March alone. In the same time period, the 843 area code ranked ninth on the list, receiving 46 million fraudulent calls.

RoboKiller predicts spam calls could reach 70 billion by the end of 2021 and a potential 90 billion spam texts sent by the year’s end. HTC Wireless members and AT&T customers have access to the AT&T Call Protect app. The mobile app is free to download from the App Store or Google Play. Once the app is downloaded, open it and enter your wireless number. Select continue and a free text with a PIN will be sent to your phone with prompts to activate the app. Block spam risk and other unknown callers with the AT&T Call Protect app.

HTC celebrates Earth Day year-round

Many local organizations celebrated Earth Day on April 22, and just because the day is over, the work towards protecting the environment shouldn’t end. If recycling continues at the current rate in Horry County, the Horry County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) estimates the landfill facility will have capacity until 2040.

South Carolina has a statewide recycling goal of 40 percent of the waste produced, and taking just a few small steps each day can help our neighborhoods, region, and state reach that goal.

HTC’s green initiatives include:

Paperless Billing Save a stamp. Save a check. Save time.

HTC encourages members to migrate from paper bills to electronic bills.  Paperless statements are convenient and clutter-free. Although HTC members have been able to manage and view bills online for many years now, HTC is encouraging members to go completely paperless by paying their bills using bank draft.  This saves you stamps and time. Members are a click away from savings at HTC My Account on www.htcinc.net.

Some of the benefits of paperless billing include:

  • Receive monthly email notification when statements are available for online viewing.
  • View, download or print the same information online 24/7 that’s on a paper statement.
  • View old statements – up to 18 months – free of charge.
  • Help the environment by cutting down on paper.
  • Reduce mail and paper clutter at home.

Some of the benefits of automatic bank draft include:

  • Save time with no more writing checks, buying stamps, etc.
  • Safe, secure and confidential.

Waste Recycling Bins Company-Wide

HTC encourages employees to be environmentally responsible by placing recycling bins throughout the organization for paper and plastic waste.

Energy Conservation

Employees are encouraged to take the stairs instead of using the elevator to conserve energy. Employees are also conservative with energy by turning off lights and powering down computers when not in use.

Green Plus Certification

HTC was awarded Certification in the Green Plus program for its high standard of sustainability initiatives. Developed by the Institute for Sustainability Development, the Green Plus program is a nationwide network of businesses that have challenged themselves to achieve the best environmental practices and have dedicated themselves to being a sustainable business. The Certification is earned through a diagnostic evaluation assessing the business’s sustainability efforts across three platforms: People, Planet and Performance.
