Glad to see you back for this edition in our series on ‘A Closer Look at Streaming’!
We have worked through some of the basics, the history of Streaming, and how we got to where we are today. While we are on the subject, did you know that we have been blogging about streaming externally for well over a year? A few of our blogs on the topic include:
A La Carte TV – You Asked for It!, Â Don’t Scream, Just Stream!, and The Holidays are Fa-La-La-La FAST approaching!
In fact, we have been blogging for some time on the topic externally and decided that we wanted to bring the focus inward.
Trending to Streaming
Over the past 5 years, we have seen our membership go from 29% internet only to now over 50% internet only. In fact, 51% of our members use us for internet only. We are not alone in this; cord cutting is impacting every ISP in the nation. Even the largest of companies like Charter/Spectrum and Comcast have watched their numbers of video subscribers drop. What started slowly a decade ago is now occurring at a pace that would have been unimaginable at that time. The pandemic caused more people to be home and had them searching for content to watch.
In the past three years, over 20 million households have cut the cord. 20 MILLION. When you put that into perspective, over 18,000 households cut the cord every single day.
Why the Shift?
A combination of rapidly increasing programming costs, causing cable bills to continuously rise, along with new choices in the marketplace have led to this phenomenon. At the same time, internet speeds increased, Wi-Fi has improved, and the internet is now the backbone of video consumption in the home.
The traditional cable TV model as we know it is going the way of the landline telephone. Fewer and fewer people see the need to have it in their home. This is a trend that will not be slowing down.
A quick recap.
- Cord cutting began more than a decade ago.
- On average over 18,000 households cut the cord.
- Cord Cutting, is not going to slow down any time soon, the industry is changing rapidly.
