Enjoy a day trip full of history, nature and exploration just off the coast of North Carolina at beautiful Bald Head Island.
The island, accessible only by ferry as cars are not allowed, offers you the chance to rent a bicycle, golf cart or kayak and set off on a relaxing and educational tour. Both guided and self-guided tour options are available for the 10,000 acres of pristine nature preserves.
There are diverse types of wildlife that you may encounter including dolphins, loggerhead turtles, birds, fish, fox, squirrels, alligators and deer. Pack a picnic and take advantage of the 14 miles of white, sandy beaches, restaurants and shops.
You can also pay a visit to the top of Old Baldy, the state’s oldest standing lighthouse. Built in 1817, Old Baldy rises over the trees where you can see a 360-degree view of the island. The lighthouse stands 110 feet high and was originally powered using 15 whale oil lamps.
Bald Head Island has been the filming backdrop for several Hollywood productions, including Weekend at Bernie’s, Sleeping With the Enemy, The Butcher’s Wife and Amos and Andrew.
