HTC Celebrates 70 Years of Connecting Members and Community

Though hard to imagine today, most of Horry County was without telephone service at the beginning of the 1950’s.  At that time, the telecommunications industry and providers were primarily focused on serving residents and businesses in more populated areas and cities.

It was time for rural Horry County to have telephone service.  Eighty-one dedicated, local leaders met at the Horry County Courthouse on June 16, 1952.  They officially incorporated Horry Telephone Cooperative, adopt bylaws and petitioned the state of South Carolina for a charter. Little did they know, what started out as a quest to fill a need would turn into a Cooperative that has become a vital part of keeping our communities connected.

By the end of the 1950s, HTC had more than 1,500 members utilizing phone service throughout Horry County.  And here in 2022, HTC continues to operate on the leading-edge of the telecommunications industry. With more than 100,000 subscribers, HTC is providing the largest fiber-optic network in the region.

HTC doesn’t only provide the area with telecommunication services.  HTC has given back to countless charities, non-profit organizations and schools over the last 70 years. HTC isn’t just about connecting people with service, but also connecting to make all of our lives better.

As for the future, it looks as bright for both our area and the Cooperative as well.

“There’s an old proverb that states, ‘If you’re looking for shade, the best time to have planted a tree was 20 years ago,'” said Hagg. “In much the same way, the investments HTC is making today are to provide a bright future for our members and our community.”
