Busy schedules. Homework. Growing pains. Getting through the school years can be tough for any kid. Thriving in school — especially as a kid who has faced extraordinary challenges — is outstanding and worthy of recognition. That’s why HTC has turned the spotlight on some truly astonishing local students through the HTC REEL Kids program. Since 2001, HTC REEL Kids (Recognizing Extraordinary Examples of Leadership) has showcased students of all ages in Horry County Schools. These Kindergarten through 12th grade students — some of whom may not otherwise be recognized — have proven their leadership abilities through scholastic, athletic and community achievements. Moreover, they have done so in the face of adversity or extenuating circumstances. The HTC REEL Kids program honors these individuals by featuring them, along with their guidance counselors or teachers, on “RiverTalk.” Watch these special moments each Friday on HTC Digital Cable channel 4. THEY SURVIVED. NOW, THEY THRIVE. “When we receive the nominations from the schools and read about the trials these young people have endured, we are humbled,” says HTC Chief Executive Officer Mike Hagg. “These REEL Kids have struggled through physical disabilities, learning disabilities, the loss of loved ones, diseases, emotional problems, abuse, abandonment and so much more. The most remarkable thing is that the REEL Kids have overcome what some would have seen as stumbling blocks.”  Conway Middle School REEL Kid Garrey Sumter with HTC CEO Mike Hagg
