HTC Warns Community of Misleading Sponsored Web Search Ads Impersonating Cooperative

Fake Search Results and Contact Numbers may Redirect to Fraudulent Sites; HTC Shares Tips to Avoid Being Scammed

January 9, 2026, Conway, S.C. – HTC, the largest telecommunications cooperative in the United States, is alerting the community of misleading sponsored web search advertisements that falsely appear to represent the Cooperative when users search online for “HTC.” These ads are not affiliated with HTC and may redirect individuals to third-party or fraudulent websites or phone numbers, potentially putting individuals’ personal and financial information at risk.

HTC recently identified instances where paid search ads appear at the top of web search results using HTC’s name and branding. While they may look legitimate at first glance, clicking these ads can lead users to websites not affiliated with HTC or serve up a phone number unrelated to HTC. The Cooperative is urging members, and non-members alike, to take extra precautions at the present time when searching for HTC online.

“We want our community to be informed and protected,” said Lana Suggs, HTC Director of Member Operations. “Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and sponsored ads can look very convincing. Knowing what to look for can make all the difference in protecting one’s personal and financial information.”

How to Spot and Avoid Fake or Misleading Ads
HTC recommends the following steps to help avoid being misdirected or scammed:
  • Check the web address carefully. HTC’s official website will always use the correct domain (www.htcinc.net). Be cautious of misspellings, extra words or unfamiliar URLs.
  • Look beyond the ‘Sponsored’ label. Sponsored ads appear at the top of search results, but they are paid placements and not always verified as legitimate.
  • Avoid clicking ads when unsure. Instead, manually type HTC’s website address (www.htcinc.net) into your browser or use a trusted bookmark.
  • When in doubt, contact HTC directly. Our support numbers are always local with an 843-area code. The only 800# HTC will use for residential service is 800-824-6779. If something doesn’t look right, don’t trust it.

HTC is actively monitoring the situation and taking steps to report misleading ads and telephone numbers through appropriate channels. As scams and spoofing attempts continue to evolve, HTC remains committed to educating and protecting the communities it serves through awareness, transparency and proactive communication.
