HTC CELEBRATES LIFELINE AWARENESS WEEK, SEPTEMBER 12-18

Low-income families can stay connected with telephone assistance.

Horry and Georgetown Counties, SC – Tuesday, September 7, 2010 – HTC wants to help residents “stay connected” and is reaching out to those who need home phone and wireless service but can’t afford it. During the celebration of “Lifeline Awareness Week,” September 12-18, HTC will promote South Carolina’s Lifeline and Link-Up assistance programs which offer discounts to help residents have access to basic telephone and wireless service.

“Access to local emergency services and community resources is vital to our low-income families and elderly residents. HTC knows that staying connected to local resources and emergency services can improve and possibly save lives,” said Jamie Colway, HTC Marketing Supervisor. “Unfortunately, some do not have access to basic home phone and wireless service because of affordability, but with Lifeline and Link-Up, there is help.”

Under the Lifeline program, telephone customers who participate in certain public assistance programs are eligible to receive a basic telephone service discount of $13.50 per month and $8.25 on the monthly bill for wireless service. Link-Up provides a 50 percent reduction in the telephone service installation charge, up to a maximum of $30, for qualifying households that do not currently have telephone service. Residents may qualify for South Carolina’s Lifeline and Link-Up programs if they receive benefits such as Food Stamps, Medicaid, or other similar programs.
