HTC Hosts Engineering Students from Coastal Carolina University to Provide Hands-On Industry Experience

Students Toured Facilities as HTC Personnel Aim to Connect Classroom Learning with Real-World Application

September 18, 2024, Conway, S.C., – HTC, the area’s largest fiber internet provider, recently hosted 50 engineering students from Coastal Carolina University (CCU) for an exclusive tour of HTC’s plant and network facilities. The tour offered students a unique opportunity to experience firsthand how their classroom education translates into real-world telecommunications applications.

During the tour, students took advantage of being able to tour key HTC operational areas, including the Cooperative’s Plant, Network Operations Center (NOC) and Central Office (CO) buildings. These facilities are critical to the seamless operation of HTC’s modern communication networks and by touring them, CCU students were able to gain a more in-depth understanding of the technology and processes which power them.

“HTC was thrilled to host these talented students and give them a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to operate a modern telecommunications network,” said Ryan Graham HTC Plant Engineering Executive Director. “With events like these, our goal is to bridge the gap between student’s academic studies and practical applications in the field, while also inspiring the next generation of professionals.”

In addition to the tours, students heard from experienced professionals in the Cooperative’s Network Engineering and Human Resources departments. The Network Engineering team shared insights into the complex, cutting-edge infrastructure that supports high-speed internet, fiber optics and other advanced communication services. Representatives from Human Resources discussed career opportunities in the telecommunications industry, focusing on how the HTC nurtures talent and supports employee growth.

A special highlight of the event included presentations by previous and current interns of HTC, many of whom are graduates or current CCU students. These interns provide valuable perspectives on transitioning from academia to the workforce, sharing their personal experiences of working in a fast-paced, innovative industry.

“Coastal Carolina University is pleased to partner with HTC for this invaluable opportunity,” said Reggie Bell, CCU Lecturer and Coordinator of the Industry Relations & Internship Program. “This tour not only broadens our students’ understanding, but it also inspires them to envision their future careers. These direct learning experiences allow us to nurture the next generation of engineers.”

This initiative is part of HTC’s ongoing commitment to fostering education, community involvement and workforce development. By providing hands-on demonstrations and engaging with students, the Cooperative hopes to encourage future engineers to pursue careers in the telecommunications industry, helping to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the field.
