Local Student Alden McCann Awarded Prestigious Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Sarah Tyree Good Neighbor Scholarship

HTC Supports FRS as Socastee High School Student Receives $5,000 Award

April 24, 2025, Conway, S.C., – HTC, the largest telecommunications cooperative in the United States, today announced Alden McCann, a student at Socastee High School, has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Sarah Tyree Good Neighbor Scholarship from the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS). Accompanied by his mother, Alexandria, McCann was recognized with a check presentation ceremony celebrating this outstanding achievement.

“I am incredibly honored to be chosen as a recipient of this scholarship,” said McCann, “This support allows me to focus more fully on my education and continue volunteering at the hospital which is something I am passionate about. Giving back to the community that raised me is important, and this scholarship helps make that possible.”

The FRS scholarship program is a highly competitive national initiative that provides financial support to students from rural communities across the United States. Each year, FRS receives a multitude of applications, with this year seeing more than 2,000 submitted from students living in rural areas. Of those received, only 50 scholarships are awarded. To be selected signifies that McCann’s application stood out among thousands for his academic excellence, character and deep-rooted pride in his rural community. McCann plans to attend the University of South Carolina this fall, where he will focus his studies in biology.

“It’s truly heartwarming to see our community stand behind Alden and lift him up as he pursues his dreams,” said Alexandria McCann, Alden’s mother. “He has always wanted to use his education to give back, and knowing he’s supported by his hometown fills me with pride.

HTC is a proud supporter of the Foundation for Rural Service and its mission to sustain and strengthen rural communities through programs that invest in the next generation of leaders. While FRS administers and awards the scholarships independently, HTC actively promotes this opportunity each year to eligible students. HTC remains committed to educational advancement and to the rural communities they serve.

“At HTC, we believe in the power of education and importance of investing in the future of our rural communities,” said Wendy McCrackin, HTC Chief Executive Officer, Customer Operations and Human Resources. “Supporting the Foundation for Rural Service and celebrating students like Alden McCann is one way we help open doors for the next generation of leaders. We are proud to see local talent being recognized in such a meaningful way.”
