HTC Continues Support for Fire Safety Across the Community
Ongoing partnership with the American Red Cross helps bring fire prevention resources and education to local families
Fire safety starts with preparation. For families, having working smoke alarms can provide critical time to escape when every second matters. That is why HTC continues to support the American Red Cross and its efforts to help protect families throughout the community.
As part of that continued commitment, HTC recently presented a $5,000 donation to the American Red Cross of the Palmetto South Carolina Region. Wanda Pearson, a representative with the American Red Cross, accepted the donation on behalf of the organization.
The contribution will support the Red Cross Sound the Alarm program and its ongoing fire safety efforts.
Helping Families Prepare for Fire
Sound the Alarm is part of the American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign. The program focuses on helping families reduce their risk of home fires.
Through community outreach, volunteers provide free smoke alarms and fire safety education. They also help families create escape plans and better understand what to do before an emergency occurs.
The need remains significant. According to the American Red Cross, home fires remain one of the most common disasters affecting families across the country. Local efforts bring that national mission directly into the communities HTC serves.
The American Red Cross Eastern Chapter serves seven counties across eastern South Carolina. Its teams work with local fire departments and community partners to identify opportunities for fire safety education and smoke alarm installations.
The organization responds to community requests while also using fire risk data to identify areas with greater need. Those efforts can include neighborhoods with lower incomes and other populations facing greater vulnerability to home fires.
More Than Smoke Alarms
A smoke alarm can make an important difference. However, fire safety involves much more than installing an alarm.
During Sound the Alarm efforts, volunteers can help residents understand the importance of working smoke alarms. They can also provide information about fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
Large-scale events, known as Sound the Alarm blitzes, can bring volunteers and first responders together to reach numerous homes in a single day.
These events often involve local fire departments, state fire officials, Red Cross volunteers and community partners. Together, they help install alarms, share safety information and encourage families to create an escape plan.
HTC has supported this work before and remains committed to supporting future opportunities.
