What is a Data Cap? Does it Affect You?

First, a little background. What brings us to the topic of data caps?

HTC prides itself on providing our members access to a top-of-the-line network, yet no matter how cutting-edge our product is or how competitive the pricing is, if our members are unhappy, we do not consider the job done. Enter satisfaction surveys. You may have seen one of these in your inbox in recent weeks, and if you participated, we appreciate your feedback. HTC employees comb through survey responses and gained insight allows us to make more informed decisions, therefore improving your service and experience. We also try to share some of the results back to our members through various channels such as e-mail, social media, blog posts, and our Life Connections magazine. This way, you can see the knowledge we gained from your responses in action.

Where do surveys and data caps collide?

We were surprised to learn, by way of one of our recent surveys, that almost 25% of our members believe HTC Internet has data caps. 😲 We hope this may only be leftover thinking from the days where wireless phone packages had hefty data overage fees. Wherever the idea comes from, we feel it’s important to provide additional information and assurance to our members that you are free to use HTC Internet as much as you want. No data caps. No overage charges.

What is a “data cap”?

In simplest terms, it is a limit that a service provider imposes on the amount of data a user can use during a certain period. Downloading files, browsing online, gaming and streaming your favorite show all use a certain amount of data.

Service providers that hinder their customers with data caps typically do one of the following.

  • Cut off the user’s internet entirely.
  • Throttle the user’s internet speeds, making it nearly impossible to do any major activities.
  • Charge pricey overage fees for the additional usage.

Some providers may utilize data caps to manage network congestion, but HTC works diligently to provide internet service that allows you the freedom to not worry. Have you spent an embarrassing number of hours watching your favorite Netflix show? Did time get away from you while playing Call of Duty? Don’t worry, no judgment from me, as I’ve been guilty of both. Thankfully, HTC has you covered with more data and bandwidth than you could possibly need. Our network is designed to handle the capacity of our users even during peak times. Multiple layers of redundancy are built in with diverse paths to Columbia, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Kansas City to keep you connected to the Internet and the world.

How much data do people use?

According to an Open Vault Insights Report, conducted at the end of 2023, average monthly usage eclipsed a new milestone with consumption at 600 GB per month and setting the stage to exceed 700 GB by the end of 2024.  That’s a 9.3% increase over the 2022 average.

Some super users consume over 2 TB each month. That’s a lot of data, but no matter if your usage is average or extreme, HTC Internet allows you to do the things you want to do, without concern of using too much data.
