REEL Kids Get Real Recognition

For more than 20 years, HTC has had the pleasure of creating a connection and relationship with our Horry County Schools through the HTC REEL Kids program by honoring students who demonstrate leadership excellence while overcoming life challenges.

This year, for the first time in REEL Kids history, we’re excited to have the opportunity to expand our program to now include not only Horry County schools, but also schools from both Georgetown and Marion Counties. And throughout the spring months, HTC spotlighted our 2021-22 REEL Kids award recipients by releasing their stories individually every weekend on social media and the HTC website.

Coming out of the pandemic, the celebration for the REEL Kids was something quite different as compared to the old awards banquet. This year, in addition to their stories being shared, every REEL Kid was able to take part in a celebration held at Ripley’s Aquarium Myrtle Beach.

The 2022 REEL Kids guest speaker was Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers Head Football Coach Jamey Chadwell. In speaking at the REEL Kids celebration, Coach Chadwell focused on the importance of perseverance, overcoming adversity and being the best student, friend and teammate possible. In addition, current Las Vegas Raiders (and Socastee High School graduate) Hunter Renfrow sent in a special video message congratulating the 2021-22 REEL Kids award winners.

We invite you to watch each video to learn more about what makes every one of these students a REEL Kid by visiting https://www.htcinc.net/community/htc-reel-kids/.

HTC Donates to HGTC Electrical Lineman Technician Program

HTC recently donated an electrical lineman technician bag and equipment to the Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) Electrical Lineman Technician Program. The bag and equipment, which will be used by select students of the program, includes all of the pertinent tools needed to help in learning the skills needed for this unique job.

HTC is one of several utility companies in South Carolina that HGTC has partnered with to offer a comprehensive training program that will prepare candidates for entry-level line work positions in the electric or telecommunications industries.  Preparation includes providing a broad understanding of the skills, knowledge, safe work practices and physical ability required to perform line work. Students receive classroom and field training in math, electrical circuit analysis, power systems, and transformer theory, as well as safety and climbing techniques.

The donation of this equipment is just one of the ways HTC is investing in the future of our workforce and the community,” said Craig Johnson, Director of Construction Services at HTC. “We greatly appreciate the HGTC Electrical Lineman Program, as it gives those interested in the electrical and telecommunications industries a chance to get the fundamental training and experience necessary prior to joining the workforce.”

Internet Education: What is the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless frequencies?

The primary differences between the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz wireless frequencies are range and bandwidth.

5GHz (not to be confused with 5G wireless) provides faster data rates at a shorter distance, whereas 2.4GHz offers coverage for farther distances, but may perform at slower speeds. The 2.4 GHz has a farther range than the 5 GHz frequency as the higher frequency signals cannot penetrate solid objects like walls and floors as well as lower frequency signals.

Key Scholarship Awarded to Local High School Seniors

The 2022 Key Scholarship award winners were recently recognized by HTC and Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union. This year’s winners were HCS Early College High School senior Mar’Teona Singleton and Johnsonville High School senior Braydin Moore.   This is the 16th year HTC and Carolina Trust have been awarded a $1,000 scholarship each.  High school seniors from Horry, Georgetown, Marion, Williamsburg, and the southern part of Florence County planning to attend either Coastal Carolina University or Francis Marion University were encouraged to apply.

“The Key Scholarship demonstrates our support of local students and higher education,” said Carlton Lewis, HTC Chief Operating Officer and Carolina Trust Board of Directors Member. “Both HTC and Carolina Trust are dedicated to investing in the communities we serve, and this scholarship provides an excellent opportunity to support our youth.”
